Best dispensaries in Washington DC
This guide is general information, not legal advice. DC cannabis rules are set by local law and the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCA), and federal law still applies on federal land. Store hours and licenses change, so confirm any retailer on the ABCA list before you go.
Looking for the best dispensary in Washington DC? The first thing to know is that DC has no licensed recreational stores. Every licensed shop is a medical cannabis retailer regulated by ABCA, and buyers need a valid DC medical cannabis registration. This guide lists licensed retailers across several wards, all taken from the official ABCA list, and explains how to check any shop before you walk in.
We do not accept payment for placement, and we do not rank stores by quality. Kind Seed Co does not sell cannabis products. We sell seeds to adults 21 and older for lawful home growing where it is allowed.
What Washington DC law says for buyers
Washington DC has a medical cannabis program run by ABCA. Only registered patients, or caregivers acting for them, can buy at licensed retailers, and they need a valid registration and photo ID. Initiative 71 lets adults 21 and older possess up to two ounces and give small amounts as gifts, but DC has no licensed recreational sales. ABCA says licensed retailers may open between 7 am and 11 pm.

Do not use cannabis in a car, even when parked, and never drive impaired. Taking cannabis across state lines is illegal under federal law, even between two states that allow it. Federal property, including national parks, most of the National Mall and airports, is also off limits.
How we built this list
Every store here comes from official ABCA records, accessed October 29, 2026. We kept only locations that showed an active license and a street address in or right next to Washington DC. Then we picked a spread of neighborhoods, so you can find a store close to where you are. We did not use paid listings, online star ratings or reviews, and the reason each store is listed is practical, such as location or access, not a claim about quality.

Getting around Washington DC
DC has more than 70 licensed medical cannabis retailers spread across all eight wards. Many are close to Metro stations. Unlicensed shops that offer cannabis as a gift with another purchase are not licensed retailers, and ABCA has been enforcing against them.
How to check a license yourself
ABCA posts the official list of licensed medical cannabis retailers by ward, including internet only retailers. Licensed retailers must display their license in the store. If a shop is not on the ABCA list, it is not a licensed retailer.

It is worth the minute it takes. Licensed stores must sell tested, labeled and tracked products. Unlicensed sellers do not follow those rules.
What to bring and what to expect
- Your DC medical cannabis registration. Retailers must confirm it before any sale.
- A photo ID.
- Payment. Some retailers take cash only. Ask ahead.
- Patience at the door. Retailers check registration and ID for every visit.
- Hours. ABCA allows licensed retailers to open between 7 am and 11 pm, but each store sets its own hours inside that window.
ABCA lets adults 21 and older register for the medical program, and some retailers can help with the paperwork. Rules on registration change, so check the current ABCA process before you rely on it.
Tips for a first visit
If you are new, visit on a weekday when stores are quieter, and let staff know it is your first time. Ask about product labels, packaging and storage, and keep everything sealed until you get home. Staff can explain product types, but they should not make health claims. For a longer checklist, see our guide, read this before you shop at a marijuana dispensary.
Red flags to avoid
- A shop that is not on the official state list.
- Products with no state label, batch number or test information.
- “Gifting” setups where cannabis comes free with a sticker or T shirt.
- Sellers who do not check ID.
- Delivery offers from anyone other than a licensed business.
Growing your own in Washington DC
Under Initiative 71, adults 21 and older in DC can grow up to six plants at their principal residence, with no more than three mature at a time. Federal land, which covers much of the city, stays off limits for possession and use.

For adults who can grow legally, a small indoor grow is a great way to learn. Read our Washington DC cannabis seeds guide and our overview of legal requirements for growing weed plants in your state first. Then look at beginner seeds or compact autoflower seeds, which suit tents and small rooms.
