What Is a Main Cola on a Cannabis Plant?

A cola on a cannabis plant is a cluster of flowers that forms along the top of a stem, and the main cola is the one at the very top of the main stem. Side branches form smaller colas. Topping cuts off the main tip, so new tops grow from below the cut.

What Is a Cola on a Cannabis Plant?

A cola is the long cluster of buds that forms where flowers stack tightly along the end of a stem. Every flowering branch can make one, but the size varies a lot. Growers use the word for the whole cluster, not for a single small bud. On a healthy plant in late flower, the colas are the dense spears you see at the top of each branch.

Where Is the Main Cola on a Weed Plant?

The main cola sits at the very top of the main stem, the central stalk that grew straight up from the seedling. On an untrained plant it is usually the tallest point, so it is the easiest one to spot. Because it grows closest to an overhead light, it tends to get the most light. In one 2025 indoor cannabis study, the authors report that by the fourth week the PPFD reaching the top and lower canopy differed five-fold or more at several points (Plants 2025). That describes canopy levels in one setup, not a measured main cola versus side cola comparison.

How Is the Top Cola Different From Side Colas?

Side colas form at the tips of the upper side branches. They are usually smaller than the main cola on an untrained plant, because they sit lower and get less light. Lower bud sites deep in the plant often stay small and airy, which our guide to popcorn buds covers. When the canopy is kept even, side colas can come closer in size to the top, but the size of any cola is never guaranteed.

Colas on a Cannabis Plant at a Glance

Part Where it grows What growers notice
Main cola Top of the main stem Usually the most exposed to the light, but not promised to be the biggest
Side colas Tips of the upper side branches Smaller tops that can come closer in size when the canopy is even
Lower bud sites Inside and low on the plant Often get less light and stay small
Several main tops After topping or similar training Several even tops instead of one
Broken top Any cola stem that snaps Needs quick support or repair

How Do Growers Get Multiple Colas?

Growers get multiple colas by training. Cutting the main tip, called topping, usually leads to new tops growing from below the cut, and our guide to topping cannabis plants explains how. Bending branches outward with low stress training can also bring side colas up level with the top.

FAQ

Is the main cola always the biggest bud?

Not always. On an untrained plant the main cola is often the largest, because it sits highest and gets the most light. Training, light placement and genetics all change that. A plant that has been topped or trained flat can grow several tops of similar size, and a damaged top can end up smaller than the side colas.

Do autoflowers have a main cola?

Yes. Autoflowers have a main stem with a top cola, just like photoperiod plants. Some growers prefer gentler training on autoflowers, since the plants flower on their own schedule. Some prefer to leave the main cola untouched and use light bending, while others top early. Either way, the plant forms colas.

What happens if the main cola breaks?

A snapped main cola is not always lost. If the stem is only bent or partly cracked, quick support may save it, and our broken and bent stems guide covers the fix. If the top breaks off fully, the side colas keep growing and the plant can still finish its flowering.

Is a cola the same as a bud?

Not quite. A bud is a single cluster of flowers, while a cola is the larger stack of buds along the end of a stem. People often use the words loosely, so you may hear the top cola called the top bud. On a seed listing or grow forum, cola almost always means that main cluster at a branch tip.
