How to get a medical marijuana card in Mississippi

This guide is general information, not legal or medical advice. Program rules, fees and forms change. Always confirm details with the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) Medical Cannabis Program and talk to a qualified health care provider about your own situation.

If you live in Mississippi and want to join the state’s medical cannabis program, the process follows a set order: confirm you are eligible, see a qualified provider, register with the state and then buy only from licensed outlets. This guide walks through how to get a medical marijuana card in Mississippi step by step, based on the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) Medical Cannabis Program’s published guidance as of October 29, 2026. It focuses on the access steps only. It does not discuss whether cannabis helps any condition. Mississippi’s program was created by the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Act in 2022 and is run by the Mississippi State Department of Health. For state basics on seeds and home growing rules, see our Mississippi marijuana seeds page. Kind Seed Co sells only to adults 21 and older.

Who runs the program

The Mississippi State Department of Health runs the patient and practitioner side of the program, including registration, cards and caregiver approvals. The official site is mmcp.ms.gov. Contact the program at MCRegistration@msdh.ms.gov or 601 206 1540 with questions.

The program sets limits in Mississippi Medical Cannabis Equivalency Units. MSDH lists a possession limit of 28 MMCEU and a purchase limit of 24 MMCEU in 30 days. Caregivers must be 21 and older and can serve up to five patients. Nonresidents with a qualifying condition and a card from their home state can apply for a temporary card valid for up to 15 days.

Step by step: getting registered in Mississippi

Step 1: Find a registered practitioner

An in person visit with a registered practitioner

Mississippi lets registered physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and, for some conditions, optometrists certify patients. The practitioner must be registered with the program.

Step 2: Have an in person visit

Your first certification visit must be in person. The state allows telehealth for later visits in some cases. The practitioner evaluates whether you have a qualifying condition.

Step 3: Your practitioner registers the certification

If you qualify, the practitioner enters your certification in the state system.

Step 4: Apply online within six months

Create an account on the program portal, verify your email and complete the application. Upload a clear photo and your ID. MSDH says you must apply within six months of the certification.

Step 5: Pay the fee

Pay the card fee online. MSDH lists a 25 dollar fee, a 15 dollar fee for Medicaid recipients and a waiver for disabled veterans and first responders.

Step 6: Wait for review and your e card

MSDH says applications are reviewed in about 10 days. Once approved, an electronic card is issued within about five days.

Step 7: Buy from a licensed dispensary

Patients buy from licensed dispensaries, within the possession and purchase limits set by the program in Mississippi Medical Cannabis Equivalency Units, or MMCEU.

Qualifying condition categories

State law lists the conditions that can make a patient eligible. As of October 29, 2026, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) Medical Cannabis Program lists these categories:

  • Cancer
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Glaucoma
  • Spastic quadriplegia
  • HIV or AIDS
  • Hepatitis
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Agitation of dementias
  • Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Autism
  • Pain refractory to appropriate opioid management
  • Diabetic or peripheral neuropathy
  • Spinal cord disease or severe injury
  • A chronic, terminal or debilitating condition that produces cachexia, chronic pain, severe nausea, seizures or severe and persistent muscle spasms

These categories come from Mississippi Code 41 137 3, and MSDH may add conditions by rule. Check the program site for the current list. A condition on this list only means a patient may qualify for the program. It does not mean cannabis is a proven or appropriate treatment for that condition. Only a qualified provider can decide whether you meet the criteria.

Costs and timing

MSDH lists the patient card fee at 25 dollars. Medicaid recipients pay 15 dollars, and the fee is waived for disabled veterans and first responders. Practitioner visit fees are separate. Review takes about 10 days, and the electronic card follows within about five days of approval.

Cards are valid for one year. Renewal requires a new certification from a registered practitioner.

What about growing at home?

The Mississippi Medical Cannabis Act does not allow patients to grow cannabis at home. Products must come from licensed dispensaries. Adult use cannabis is not legal in Mississippi. Federal law also still treats marijuana as a controlled substance outside the narrow categories moved to Schedule III in 2026, and the federal hemp definition is scheduled to change on December 11, 2026.
