Light leaks during cannabis flower and what they do

Light leaks during cannabis flowering

Photoperiod cannabis plants flower because nights get long. Indoors, growers create that long night by switching to a 12/12 schedule, twelve hours of light and twelve of darkness. That darkness needs to be truly dark. Light leaking into the tent during the night period can stress plants, slow flowering and in some cases lead to hermaphrodite flowers. This guide explains how light leaks affect flowering cannabis, how to find them and how to fix them. It is for adults 21 and older growing where home cultivation is legal.

Why darkness matters in flower

Photoperiod plants measure the length of uninterrupted darkness. When that dark period is long enough, they keep flowering. When it is interrupted by light, the plant can read that as a shorter night. Repeated interruptions can confuse the plant and push it toward stress responses.

Autoflowering plants do not depend on a dark period to flower, so light leaks are much less of a concern for them. Most of this guide applies to photoperiod plants.

What a light leak can do

Effects vary with how bright the leak is, how long it lasts and the genetics of the plant.

  • Delayed flowering. Plants may slow down or take longer to finish.
  • Revegging. Strong and repeated light during the night can push some plants back toward vegetative growth.
  • Hermaphrodite flowers. Stress from light leaks is one of several triggers that can cause some plants to grow male flowers, which can pollinate the crop and fill buds with seeds.
  • Uneven development. Branches near the leak may mature differently from the rest of the plant.

A single brief flash, such as opening the tent for a moment, is unlikely to ruin a crop. Repeated or steady leaks are the real concern.

Common sources of light leaks

  1. Zippers and seams. The most common leaks on tents.
  2. Duct ports. Loose port collars let light in around ducting.
  3. Indicator lights. Small LEDs on timers, fans, power strips or controllers can be surprisingly bright in a dark tent.
  4. Room lights. A lamp or hallway light near a thin tent can shine through fabric.
  5. Doors and windows. In a closet or room grow, gaps around doors let light in.
  6. Viewing windows. Some tents have windows that need to be closed during the night period.

How to find leaks

Sit inside a dark tent or room during the day for a few minutes with the tent closed. Let your eyes adjust. Any bright spots or glowing lines are leaks. You can also reverse the test by turning the grow light on at night and walking around the outside of the tent in a dark room. Light showing outside means light can get in.

How to fix leaks

  • Foil tape or black duct tape over seams, pinholes and corners.
  • Tighten port collars with zip ties or bungee cords around ducting.
  • Cover indicator lights on gear with black electrical tape.
  • Close viewing windows and add a cover if needed.
  • Block door gaps with weather stripping or a rolled towel for room grows.
  • Move bright lamps away from the tent or turn them off during the grow’s night.

Working in the tent during the dark period

If you must check plants during the dark period, use a green headlamp or flashlight. Many growers believe plants respond less to dim green light, and it lets you see without fully interrupting the night. Keep these checks short and rare. Better yet, schedule your light period so the lights are on when you are usually home and awake.

What to do if you find hermaphrodite flowers

Check plants regularly from the second week of flower onward. Look for small banana shaped structures or pollen sacs at the nodes. If you find a few, carefully remove them with tweezers and keep watching. If a plant has many, consider removing it from the tent to protect the others. Fixing the leak is the first step so the stress does not continue.

Preventing problems before the flip

Before you switch to 12/12, run a full leak check. Make sure your timer is reliable and set correctly. Tape over any indicator lights. Confirm that the room around the tent will stay dark during the night period every day. Prevention takes a few minutes and protects months of work.

Genetics and stress tolerance

Some genetics are more stable under stress than others. Quality feminized seeds from stable lines tend to resist hermaphrodite traits better, but no plant is immune to repeated stress. Browse our cannabis seeds collection for stable photoperiod genetics.

Room grows and closets

Light leaks are often worse in closet or room grows than in tents, because doors, windows and outlets all let light in. Hang blackout fabric or panda film over windows. Add weather stripping around the door and a sweep at the bottom. Unplug or relocate chargers, clocks and other gadgets with glowing displays. Keep the smoke detector working and in place. Check the room at night from inside after every change, since one gap is easy to miss.

Timer failures count too

Not every leak comes from a hole in the tent. A cheap mechanical timer that slips, a power outage that resets a digital timer or a smart plug that loses its schedule can all leave lights on during the dark period. Check your timer settings after any power cut. Some growers use two timers, or a controller with a backup, so a single failure does not leave lights on all night. A quick look at the tent at lights off time once a week is an easy habit that catches these problems early.

Grow legally and responsibly

Home cultivation is only legal in some states, and each state sets its own plant limits, locking rules and rules about whether plants can be visible from a public place. You must be 21 or older to buy seeds from Kind Seed Co, and you should grow only where your state and city allow it. Check your state rules in our guide to the legal requirements for growing weed plants in your state before you plant. Federal treatment of cannabis seeds is also changing, so read our December 11 2026 seed rule explainer before you order. Keep plants and harvested flower locked away from children, pets and visitors, and never drive after using cannabis. This article is general information about gardening. Frequently asked questions

Do light leaks ruin cannabis plants?

A single brief flash rarely causes harm. Repeated or steady leaks during the dark period can delay flowering and raise the risk of hermaphrodite flowers.

How do I check for light leaks in a tent?

Sit inside the closed tent in daylight and look for bright spots, or turn the light on at night and look for light escaping outside.

Is a green light safe during the dark period?

Many growers use a dim green headlamp for short checks. Keep checks brief and rare.

Do autoflowers care about light leaks?

Much less, because they do not rely on a dark period to flower.
