Should you soak cannabis seeds first

Soaking cannabis seeds before germination

Soaking cannabis seeds first is optional, but it can help. A short soak in room temperature water for about 12 to 24 hours softens the shell and starts germination, which is useful for older or hard shelled seeds. Fresh, healthy seeds often germinate fine without soaking. The main rule is not to over soak. Leaving seeds in water for more than about 24 to 36 hours can starve them of oxygen. After the soak, move them to a damp paper towel or straight into a starter plug. This guide explains when soaking helps and how to do it. It is for adults 21 and older germinating beginner friendly seeds where home growing is legal.

What soaking does

Cannabis seeds have a hard outer shell. Water softens the shell and gets into the seed, waking it up. A soak can:

  • Speed up germination by a day or so.
  • Help older or dry seeds crack.
  • Show you which seeds are already active.

When soaking helps

  • Older seeds. Seeds stored for a few years can have harder, drier shells.
  • Hard shelled seeds. Some lines have thicker shells.
  • Cool conditions. A warm soak gives seeds a head start before going into cooler media.

When to skip it

  • Fresh seeds from a recent order usually germinate well in a paper towel, plug or soil.
  • Direct planting outdoors in warm, moist soil may not need it.
  • If you cannot check on them. Over soaking is the main risk.

How to soak cannabis seeds

  1. Use clean, room temperature water. Around 70 to 75 F. Avoid cold tap water and very hot water.
  2. Use a clean glass or cup. Fill it a few inches deep.
  3. Drop seeds in. Many float at first. That is normal.
  4. Keep the glass in a warm, dark place. A cupboard or the top of a fridge works.
  5. Wait 12 to 24 hours. Many seeds sink as they absorb water. Some will show a tiny white tip.
  6. Move seeds on. Transfer to a damp paper towel, rockwool cube or starter plug.

Do floating seeds mean bad seeds

Not necessarily. Many healthy seeds float at first because of surface tension. Gently tap them after a few hours to help them sink. A seed that still floats after a day may simply have a tough shell. Give it a chance in a paper towel before giving up.

How long is too long

Seeds need oxygen to germinate. After about 24 to 36 hours in water, there is a risk of drowning them. If a seed has not cracked by then, move it to a damp paper towel where it gets air.

Additives in the soak

Some growers add a small amount of a seaweed extract or a mild root stimulant to the soak. Others add a very small dose of diluted hydrogen peroxide to add oxygen and clean the shell. These are optional and should be used carefully at low doses. Plain water works for most seeds.

Scarifying seeds

For very hard shells, some growers gently rub seeds between two sheets of fine sandpaper for a few seconds to scuff the shell before soaking. Do this very lightly. Too much can damage the seed. Most seeds do not need it.

After the soak

Move seeds to your germination method within a few hours. If a seed already shows a taproot, plant it root down about a quarter to half inch deep. Handle the taproot as little as possible.

Soaking vs paper towel vs direct planting

Method Pros Cons
Soak then paper towel Fast, easy to check More handling
Paper towel only Easy to check roots Taproots can stick to towel
Direct into plugs or soil No root handling Cannot see progress

Many growers combine a short soak with a plug or cube so seeds get a quick start and roots are not handled.

Soaking many seeds at once

If you are soaking several strains, use a separate labeled cup for each. Seeds look alike once wet, and mixing them up is easy. A strip of tape and a marker on each cup saves confusion later, especially with mixed packs.

Troubleshooting

  • Seeds did not crack after 24 hours. Move them to a damp paper towel in a warm spot and check daily for up to a week.
  • Seeds smell sour or look mushy. They may be dead or rotting. Remove them.
  • Taproot broke off. It can sometimes regrow if only the tip was damaged, but plant it gently and hope for the best.

Germination basics that apply to every method

Whatever method you choose, seeds need the same three things: steady moisture without standing water, warmth and air. Keep starter media damp like a wrung out sponge, hold the area in the mid 70s Fahrenheit and give seeds darkness or low light until they sprout. Once a seedling is up, give it gentle light right away so it does not stretch. Handle taproots as little as possible, and plant with the root pointing down. Most healthy seeds sprout within one to five days, though older seeds can take longer.

Grow legally and responsibly

Home cultivation is only legal in some states, and each state sets its own plant limits, locking rules and rules about whether plants can be visible from a public place. You must be 21 or older to buy seeds from Kind Seed Co, and you should grow only where your state and city allow it. Check your state rules in our guide to the legal requirements for growing weed plants in your state before you plant. Federal treatment of cannabis seeds is also changing, so read our December 11 2026 seed rule explainer before you order. Keep plants and harvested flower locked away from children, pets and visitors, and never drive after using cannabis. This article is general information about gardening. Is it bad if seeds float?

Not necessarily. Many healthy seeds float at first and sink later.

Can I soak seeds in tap water?

Yes, if it is clean and at room temperature. Let very cold water warm up first.

What do I do after soaking?

Move seeds to a damp paper towel, rockwool cube, starter plug or soil.
