How deep to plant cannabis seeds
Plant cannabis seeds about a quarter inch to half an inch deep, roughly 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters. If a seed has already sprouted a taproot, plant it with the root pointing down at the same depth and cover it lightly with loose, moist soil. Planting too deep can make the seedling use up its stored energy before it reaches light, while planting too shallow can let the seed dry out or push up out of the soil with its shell still on. This guide covers depth for soil, coco, plugs and outdoor sowing. It is written for adults 21 and older growing beginner friendly seeds where home growing is legal.
Why depth matters
A seed carries only a small amount of stored energy. It has to use that energy to push a taproot down and a shoot up. If the seed sits too deep, the shoot may run out of energy before it reaches light. If it sits too shallow, the seed can dry out and the shell may stay stuck on the leaves because there is not enough soil pressure to scrape it off.
Recommended depth by method
| Method | Typical depth |
|---|---|
| Unsprouted seed in soil | About 1/4 to 1/2 inch |
| Sprouted seed with taproot | About 1/4 to 1/2 inch, root down |
| Rockwool cube or plug | About 1/4 inch in the hole |
| Coco or soilless mix | About 1/4 to 1/2 inch |
| Outdoor direct sowing | About 1/2 inch, a little deeper in loose, dry soil |
How to plant at the right depth
- Moisten the medium first. It should be damp, not muddy.
- Make a hole. Use a pencil, chopstick or fingertip. Mark the tool at half an inch for consistency.
- Place the seed. If it has a taproot, point the root down. If not, lay it flat or pointed end down.
- Cover lightly. Gently brush loose medium over the seed. Do not pack it hard.
- Mist the surface. A light mist keeps the top layer moist without washing the seed out.
Planting a sprouted seed
If you germinated in a paper towel, handle the seed by the shell, not the root. Make the hole deep enough that the taproot fits without bending. The shell should sit just under the surface. Do not bury the root and shell deep together.
Signs of planting too deep
- No seedling after a week, even though the seed was active.
- A pale, long stem when the seedling finally appears.
- Seedling emerges weak and falls over.
Signs of planting too shallow
- Seed or taproot exposed on the surface.
- Seedling emerges with the shell stuck on the first leaves.
- Seed dries out and stops growing.

Helmet head: when the shell stays on
If a seedling comes up with the shell still on its leaves, mist it to soften the shell and wait a few hours. If it still does not come off, very gently remove it with clean tweezers, taking care not to tear the leaves. Planting at the right depth with moist soil helps prevent this.
Depth for outdoor sowing
Outdoor soil dries faster at the surface. Plant about half an inch deep and keep the area moist until seedlings appear. Protect the spot from birds and slugs. Wait until soil is warm enough. Our guide to soil temperature for planting cannabis covers timing.
What medium works best for seedlings
Use a light, airy seedling mix or a starter plug. Heavy soil can crust over and make it hard for the shoot to break through. Many growers start in small containers and move seedlings later. See transplanting marijuana plants for the next step.
Watering after planting
Water gently around the planting spot so you do not wash the seed deeper or uncover it. A spray bottle or small cup works well. Keep the medium moist, not soggy, until the seedling shows its first leaves.
Starting in solo cups
Many growers start seeds in clear plastic cups with drainage holes. The clear sides let you see roots develop, and the small volume keeps moisture easy to manage. Plant at about a quarter to half inch deep, then move the seedling to a larger pot once roots reach the sides.
Light after emergence
Once the seedling appears, give it gentle light right away. A seedling that has to search for light will stretch, and a long, thin stem is easy to snap. Keep lights at the distance the maker suggests for seedlings.

Keeping track of seeds
Label every pot or plug with the strain and planting date. Seeds that do not appear after about a week can be checked by gently brushing away the top layer.
Germination basics that apply to every method
Whatever method you choose, seeds need the same three things: steady moisture without standing water, warmth and air. Keep starter media damp like a wrung out sponge, hold the area in the mid 70s Fahrenheit and give seeds darkness or low light until they sprout. Once a seedling is up, give it gentle light right away so it does not stretch. Handle taproots as little as possible, and plant with the root pointing down. Most healthy seeds sprout within one to five days, though older seeds can take longer.
Grow legally and responsibly
Home cultivation is only legal in some states, and each state sets its own plant limits, locking rules and rules about whether plants can be visible from a public place. You must be 21 or older to buy seeds from Kind Seed Co, and you should grow only where your state and city allow it. Check your state rules in our guide to the legal requirements for growing weed plants in your state before you plant. Federal treatment of cannabis seeds is also changing, so read our December 11 2026 seed rule explainer before you order. Keep plants and harvested flower locked away from children, pets and visitors, and never drive after using cannabis. This article is general information about gardening. Frequently asked questions
How deep should I plant cannabis seeds?
About a quarter to half an inch deep.
Should the taproot point up or down?
Down. Plant the seed with the taproot pointing into the soil.
What happens if I plant cannabis seeds too deep?
The seedling may run out of energy before it reaches light, or emerge weak and stretched.
What if my seedling comes up with the shell still on?
Mist it and wait. If it stays stuck, gently remove it with clean tweezers.
Do I need to pack the soil over the seed?
No. Cover it lightly with loose soil so the shoot can push through easily.
How deep should seeds go in rockwool?
About a quarter inch in the cube hole.
