Cannabis Seedling Yellow Leaves: Causes and Fixes
Cannabis seedling yellow leaves usually point to watering, light or nutrition problems, while yellow cotyledons can be normal as the seed leaves age. In one controlled study on vegetative cannabis, not seedlings, plants fed 30 mg of nitrogen per liter showed visible deficiency and 75 percent less biomass than plants fed 160 mg per liter.
Why Are My Cannabis Seedling Leaves Turning Yellow?
Most yellow seedlings trace back to the basics. Common causes growers report include overwatering, light that is too strong or too close, and nutrition. Disease can also yellow and weaken seedlings, which our guide to seedling diseases covers. Look at which leaves are yellow and how fast it spreads before changing anything.

Are Yellow Cotyledons Normal?
Often, yes. The cotyledons are the first round seed leaves, and many growers see them yellow and drop as the true leaves take over. If the new leaves above are green and growing, yellow cotyledons alone are usually not a worry. If the true leaves yellow too, look for another cause. Our guide to cotyledons explains what these first leaves do.
Can Overwatering Turn Seedlings Yellow?
Yes. Seedlings have small roots, and a pot that stays soggy pushes out the air those roots need. The leaves then droop and pale. Let the top of the media dry before watering again, use small pots for small plants and make sure water drains. Light can cause yellowing too, so if the yellow sits on the leaves nearest the lamp, raise or dim it.
When Is Yellowing a Nitrogen Problem?
Nitrogen shortage usually shows as even yellowing that starts on older, lower leaves and moves up. Saloner and Bernstein grew vegetative cannabis on five nitrogen rates. Plants did best overall at 160 mg per liter. At 30 mg per liter, plants showed visible deficiency with 75 percent less biomass and 25 percent lower photosynthesis than plants at 160 mg per liter (Saloner and Bernstein 2020). Those were vegetative plants, not seedlings, and the rates are not a seedling feed plan. Our guide to nitrogen deficiency covers the signs. Check the product label and local rules.

FAQ
Should I feed yellow seedlings?
Not as a first step. Seedling yellowing often comes from water or light, and many starter mixes hold enough food for the first weeks. Feeding a seedling that is overwatered can make things worse. If lower leaves yellow evenly once true leaves are growing, a light feed may help. Check the product label and local rules.
Can too much light yellow seedlings?
Yes. A light that is too strong or too close can bleach or yellow the leaves nearest to it, often with crisp edges. Seedlings have small leaves and handle less light than older plants. If yellowing shows on the top leaves under the lamp, raise or dim the light and watch whether new growth comes in green.
Do yellow leaves turn green again?
Lightly pale leaves can green up once the cause is fixed, but badly yellowed leaves usually stay yellow and may drop. Judge the fix by the new growth. If the new leaves come in green and healthy, the problem is solved, even if a few old leaves stay yellow or fall off.
Is pH a cause of yellow seedlings?
It can be. If the root zone pH is far off, roots struggle to take up nutrients even when they are present, and leaves can yellow. Growers often check pH when feeding and watering look right but yellowing continues. Test the water and the runoff before adding more nutrients, since more feed will not fix pH.
