Cannabis pollen loses viability fast, so storing it takes care. In one study, most pollen stored at 4°C (39°F) stopped germinating within a week, and the best batch kept 22% germination after 21 days. The same team kept pollen viable for four months by mixing it with flour, drying it and storing it in liquid nitrogen.
How Long Does Cannabis Pollen Stay Viable?
Not long. In Gaudet et al., all collection stages except one lost viability after a week at 4°C (39°F), and after 21 days only Mid-stage pollen still germinated, at 22% (Gaudet et al.). How Do You Collect Cannabis Pollen?
Pollen comes from male plants, so growers first sex their plants and keep the males apart. Gaudet et al. collected pollen at four stages of male flowering. Fresh germination was 33% at the Early stage, 46% at Mid, 50% at Mid-Late and 41% at Late. Mid-stage pollen lasted longest in storage, so the authors pointed to that stage as the best time to collect (Gaudet et al.).

Can You Freeze Cannabis Pollen?
Results do not support simple home freezing. Wizenberg et al. found that pollen stored in freezer conditions (−4°C) did not germinate, no matter how long it was stored (Wizenberg et al.). Gaudet et al. found pollen put into liquid nitrogen without drying first also failed, likely because of ice forming inside the cells (Gaudet et al.).
How Did Researchers Store Pollen Long Term?
Gaudet et al. mixed pollen with baked whole wheat flour, dried it under vacuum and stored it in liquid nitrogen. After four months, germination showed no significant difference from a control that was dried and mixed with flour the same way but not frozen. Drying alone cut germination by about half compared with fresh pollen (Gaudet et al.). This is a lab method, not a kitchen freezer method.
