Cannabis mother tent and veg tent setup

Cannabis mother tent and veg tent setup

Growers who want a steady supply of their favorite plant often keep a mother plant. A mother is a healthy female plant kept in the vegetative stage so cuttings can be taken from her again and again. Each cutting grows into a clone with the same genetics. Most growers keep mothers in a separate tent from flowering plants, since mothers need long days while flowering plants need 12 hours of darkness. This guide explains how to set up a mother tent and veg tent, how to care for mothers, how to take and root cuttings and how to run a perpetual cycle. It is written for adults 21 and older growing where home cultivation is legal. Mothers, clones and flowering plants usually all count toward your state’s plant limit, so check the rules first.

Why keep a mother plant

  • Consistency. Clones share the mother’s genetics, so you know how they will grow.
  • Saved time. Clones skip the seedling stage.
  • Cost. One plant can provide many cuttings over time.
  • Keepers. If you find a standout plant from seed, a mother preserves it.

Mothers work with photoperiod plants. Autoflowers flower by age, so they are not good mothers. Our autoflower cloning guide in this series explains why.

Choosing the mother

Start from quality seeds and grow several plants. Take a cutting from each before flowering, label them and flower the originals. Keep the clone of the plant you liked best as your mother. Our marijuana seeds collection is a good starting point for a seed hunt.

Mother tent setup

Tent size

A small tent of about 2×2 or 2×3 feet is often enough for one or two mothers. Mothers are kept trimmed, so they do not need much space.

Light

Mothers need light for 18 hours or more each day. They do not need intense flowering light. A modest LED at a moderate setting keeps them healthy without fast stretching. Our LED light distance guide helps with height.

Airflow

Use a small inline fan for exhaust and a clip fan for circulation. Our inline fan CFM guide guide helps size it. Keep temperature comfortable and humidity moderate.

Pots

Larger pots of about 3 to 7 gallons give mothers room for strong roots. Over time, roots can fill the pot. Some growers root prune and repot every so often.

Caring for mothers

  • Feeding. Use a vegetative nutrient at moderate strength. Mothers need steady nitrogen but not heavy feeding.
  • Pruning. Trim regularly to keep a bushy shape with many cutting sites. Topping and training help. Our topping guide explains topping.
  • Pest checks. Pests can spread from a mother to every clone, so inspect often.
  • Refresh. Many growers replace a mother with one of her own clones after several months to a year, since older mothers can slow down.

Veg tent setup

A veg tent holds clones and young plants until they are ready to flower. Some growers combine mother and veg in one tent, since both use the same long light schedule. A separate veg tent lets you grow clones to size while the flower tent runs.

Clones rooting in a dome

Your veg tent needs:

  • An 18 hour light schedule. Our cannabis light cycle guide explains schedules.
  • A light strong enough to build size.
  • Good airflow and an inline fan.
  • Room for several plants in final or transition pots.

Taking cuttings

  1. Choose healthy lower or middle branches with a few nodes.
  2. Clean your tools first.
  3. Cut just below a node at an angle with a sharp blade.
  4. Remove lower leaves and trim large fan leaves to reduce water loss.
  5. Dip in rooting gel or powder if you use one.
  6. Place in a rooting cube or medium.

Rooting clones

Clones need high humidity, gentle light and warmth. A humidity dome on a tray works well. Many growers aim for warm, humid conditions with soft light. Roots often appear in about one to three weeks. Open the dome a little more each day once roots form.

Hardening clones before veg

Freshly rooted clones are delicate. Before moving them into the veg tent, lower the dome humidity over several days by opening the vents a little more each day. Raise light intensity slowly so leaves do not bleach or curl. Transplant into small pots first, then into larger pots once roots fill the container. Water gently and avoid strong nutrients until new growth appears. Clones that are hardened slowly usually settle into veg faster and with fewer setbacks than clones moved straight from a dome to bright light.

Keeping records

Label each mother with the strain name and the date she was chosen. Note when cuttings were taken, how many rooted and how long rooting took. Over time, these notes show which mothers clone easily and which need replacing.

A perpetual cycle

Space Light schedule Purpose
Mother tent 18 hours or more Keep mothers in veg
Clone dome 18 hours or more Root cuttings
Veg tent 18 hours Grow clones to size
Flower tent 12 hours Flower and harvest
Separate veg and flower tents

When the flower tent is harvested, plants from veg move in. New clones from the mother take their place in veg. This gives a harvest every two to three months.

Common problems

  • Light leaks. If a mother tent shares space with a flower tent, make sure flower tent darkness is complete.
  • Overcrowding. Mothers grow fast. Trim often.
  • Pest spread. Quarantine any new plant before it joins your tents.
  • Nutrient buildup. Long lived mothers can build up salts. Flush or repot when needed.

Final thoughts

A mother tent and veg tent turn one great plant into a steady supply of clones. Keep mothers on long days, trim and feed them gently, root cuttings in a warm humid dome and move clones through veg into flower on a schedule. Stay within your plant limit and keep pests out. Start with a seed hunt from our marijuana seeds to find your keeper.

Grow legally and responsibly

Home cultivation is only legal in some states, and each state sets its own plant limits, locking rules and rules about whether plants can be visible from a public place. You must be 21 or older to buy seeds from Kind Seed Co, and you should grow only where your state and city allow it. Check your state rules in our guide to the legal requirements for growing weed plants in your state before you plant. Federal treatment of cannabis seeds is also changing, so read our December 11 2026 seed rule explainer before you order. Keep plants and harvested flower locked away from children, pets and visitors, and never drive after using cannabis. This article is general information about gardening.
