Cannabis Seedling First True Leaves: What to Expect
Cannabis seedling first true leaves are the first serrated leaves above the round seed leaves. In one life-cycle study of the cultivar White Widow, the first true leaves had a single serrated blade, the second set had three, and blade count reached nine by the sixth node. A single blade was recorded again at the twenty-fifth node.
What Are True Leaves on a Cannabis Seedling?
True leaves are the first leaves the seedling grows above its seed leaves. The round seed leaves, or cannabis cotyledons, come from the seed itself and look nothing like a cannabis leaf. True leaves have the serrated edges and pointed blades that mark a cannabis plant. They grow in pairs at the first node and then at each new node up the stem.

Why Do the First True Leaves Have One Blade?
That is the normal pattern. A 2023 study in Plants followed cannabis plants of the cultivar White Widow through the full life cycle. It found that the first true leaves had a single serrated blade (Plants 2023). A single blade is a first step, not a sign of a problem. The study looked at one cultivar, so other plants can differ.
How Does the Blade Count Grow Node by Node?
In the same study, the second set of true leaves had three leaflets, the third and fourth had five, the fifth had seven, and the sixth through thirteenth had nine. Leaf area peaked at the twelfth node, where the leaf arrangement also changed from opposite pairs to alternating leaves. After that the counts eased down step by step, from eight at the fourteenth node to one at the twenty-fifth. The table below lists every count the paper reports.
Leaflets per Leaf by Node, cv. White Widow (Plants 2023, PMC10610221)
Counts as reported in the paper for one cultivar, White Widow. Other plants can differ.
| Node (leaf set) | Leaflets per leaf |
|---|---|
| 1st | 1 (serrated) |
| 2nd | 3 |
| 3rd and 4th | 5 |
| 5th | 7 |
| 6th to 13th | 9 |
| 14th | 8 |
| 15th to 19th | 7 |
| 20th to 22nd | 5 |
| 23rd and 24th | 3 |
| 25th | 1 |
When Does the Blade Count Drop Again?
As flowering goes on, leaves get simpler again. The Plants 2023 study recorded a single leaflet at the twenty-fifth node, high on the plant. In that cultivar, the leaves near the top ended as simple as the first true leaves. The guide to the cannabis life cycle covers each stage, and if seedlings struggle early, the guide to seedling diseases can help.

FAQ
Should you feed a seedling once true leaves appear?
Many growers wait. A young seedling still draws on stored food from its seed leaves, and strong feeds can burn tender roots. Growers start with plain water or a very mild feed and increase slowly as more true leaves appear. Premixed media may need nothing added for a while. Check the product label and local rules.
Is it normal for the first true leaves to have three blades?
In the 2023 Plants study of one cultivar, the first true leaves had a single blade and the second set had three. Other plants can differ, and it is not known whether a three-blade first set signals a problem, so watch the overall growth rather than one leaf count.
What if true leaves never appear?
If true leaves never appear, something is holding the seedling back. Growers usually check for a seed shell stuck on the seed leaves, very low light, cold or soggy media, and seedling diseases. Fixing those early gives the seedling its best chance to move on.
