Dry sift hash guide

Dry sift hash guide

Dry sift is the oldest and simplest way to turn trichomes into hash. You do not need water, ice or any solvent. You need cold, dry, well cured flower or trim, a set of fine screens and patience. The idea is simple. Trichome heads are heavier and more brittle than plant matter, so when they are cold and dry they snap off and fall through a screen while most of the leaf stays on top. Done carefully, dry sift can produce a clean, sandy powder that presses into hash or melts nicely on a rosin press. This guide covers gear, prep, the sifting itself, grading and storage for adults 21 and older in places where it is legal.

Dry sift vs kief

Kief is what falls into the bottom chamber of a grinder. It is real trichome material, but it is mixed with a lot of plant dust and stalks. Dry sift is the same idea made deliberate. Instead of one coarse screen you use several screens of different sizes and you work in a controlled way, so you can separate the best heads from the trash. If you have never collected kief before, our guide to making cannabis kief is a good warm up. Think of dry sift as kief with a grading system.

What you need

  • Cured flower or sugar trim from a strain with heavy resin
  • A set of sifting screens, commonly in the range of about 160 down to 45 microns
  • A smooth, clean collection surface such as glass or a rigid plastic tray
  • A plastic card or a soft brush for moving powder
  • A cold room or a freezer for prechilling material
  • Small airtight glass jars for storage
  • Parchment paper and a notebook to log each pass

Silk screens printed for screen printing work fine for hobby use. Tight framed screens are easier to keep flat than loose mesh. Label every screen by micron so you never mix them up.

Choosing the right starting material

Your sift can only be as good as what goes on the screen. Resin heavy cultivars with big, bulbous trichome heads separate more cleanly than leafy plants with small heads. Many hash makers grow specific strains just for this reason. If you are planning a grow with extraction in mind, our 710 seeds collection is built around resin production. Harvest timing matters too. Heads that are mostly cloudy tend to be firmer and break away at the stalk more cleanly, so learn to read them with our guide to cannabis trichomes 101.

The material must be fully dry and cured. Damp flower clumps and smears the heads. Overly brittle, crumbly flower shatters into fine green dust that passes straight through your screens and ruins the color.

Prep the room and the material

Cold is your friend. Trichome heads get firm and brittle when chilled, and they snap off with very little agitation. Many hobbyists work in a cool room in winter, or they chill the material in a sealed bag in the freezer for about 30 to 60 minutes before each pass. Work quickly once the material comes out so condensation does not form.

Cured cannabis buds ready for dry sifting

Humidity is the other big factor. A dry room keeps the powder loose and free flowing. In a humid room the heads stick to each other and to the screen. If you can, run a dehumidifier for a few hours before you start. Wipe every screen and surface clean, and keep pets and fans away so you do not blow your work across the table.

How to dry sift step by step

  1. Break the material. Gently break flower into small chunks. Do not grind it. Grinding makes plant dust that contaminates every grade.
  2. Start with the coarsest screen. Place a small handful on the largest micron screen held a few inches above your collection tray.
  3. Agitate lightly. Tap the frame or move the material in slow circles with a card. The first 20 to 30 seconds release the ripest, loosest heads. That first fall is often the cleanest powder of the session.
  4. Collect and label. Scrape the fall into a pile, move it to parchment and label it with the screen size and pass number.
  5. Rescreen the fall. Pour that collection onto the next smaller screen. Heads of the size you want will stay on top while smaller contaminants fall through.
  6. Repeat down the stack. Keep moving collections through progressively smaller screens until you have separate grades.
  7. Stop before it turns green. When the powder coming through starts to look green or gray, stop. You are now sifting plant matter.

Short, gentle passes beat long hard ones every time. Most of the quality is in the first minute of each pass.

Grading your sift

The size of a trichome head varies by strain, but in many cultivars the best heads collect somewhere in the middle of the range, often roughly 70 to 120 microns. The top screens catch stalks and plant bits. The bottom screens catch broken heads, stalks and dust. Compare the grades side by side under a bright light.

Grade Typical look Best use
First fall, middle screens Pale blond to light tan, sandy Pressing, rosin, top jar
Second pass, middle screens Tan with some flecks Pressing, cooking
Top screens catch Mixed heads and plant bits Rescreen or blend
Bottom screens catch Fine, dull, greenish dust Cooking or discard

Use a jeweler loupe or a cheap clip on macro lens to check purity. Clean grades look like tiny round heads with very little leaf. Dirty grades show broken stalks and green fragments.

Common mistakes

  • Sifting warm material. Warm heads stick and smear. Chill first.
  • Rubbing too hard. Heavy pressure forces leaf through the screen.
  • Using fresh or damp flower. It gums up the mesh fast.
  • Skipping labels. Unlabeled jars are hard to sort out later.
  • Overloading the screen. Small batches separate far better than big piles.

Pressing and storing dry sift

Many people press dry sift into small hash coins by wrapping it in parchment and using gentle hand pressure and a little warmth, the old method covered in our guide on how to make hash. Others run it through a rosin press, which is covered in our home rosin guide. If you press it, the rosin bag micron guide explains which bag size suits sift.

Graded dry sift in three jars

Store unpressed sift in small airtight glass jars in a cool, dark place. A fridge is fine for short term storage, and a freezer is better for longer storage. Let a cold jar warm to room temperature before opening so moisture does not condense inside.

Grow legally and responsibly

Home cultivation is only legal in some states, and each state sets its own plant limits, locking rules and rules about whether plants can be visible from a public place. You must be 21 or older to buy seeds from Kind Seed Co, and you should grow only where your state and city allow it. Check your state rules in our guide to the legal requirements for growing weed plants in your state before you plant. Federal treatment of cannabis seeds is also changing, so read our December 11 2026 seed rule explainer before you order. Keep plants and harvested flower locked away from children, pets and visitors, and never drive after using cannabis. This article is general information. Frequently asked questions

Is dry sift the same as kief?

They come from the same trichome heads. Kief is usually one pass through a grinder screen with a lot of plant matter mixed in. Dry sift uses several graded screens to separate cleaner heads from the dust.

What micron screens do I need for dry sift?

A common hobby set runs from about 160 microns down to about 45 microns. The best heads in many strains collect in the middle of that range, but every cultivar is a little different.

Can I dry sift fresh frozen material?

Dry sift works best on dried and cured material. Fresh frozen material is used for ice water hash, which is a different solventless method.

Does dry sift need any solvents?

No. Dry sift is fully solventless. It uses only cold, screens and gentle agitation.

Final thoughts

Dry sift rewards patience more than gear. Start with resinous, well cured material, keep everything cold and dry, use short gentle passes and label every grade. Compare your jars side by side and you will quickly learn what your strain and your screens can do. Once you have a few clean grades, you can press them, run them through a rosin press or store them for later.
