LST for autoflowers
LST for autoflowers means low stress training: gently bending and tying the main stem and branches so the plant grows wide and flat instead of tall. It is the best training method for autoflowers because it opens the canopy to light without the recovery time that topping or heavy pruning can require. Start when your autoflower has four or five nodes, usually around day 14 to 21, keep adjusting ties every few days and stop major bending once the plant is well into flower. This guide walks through each step. It is for adults 21 and older growing autoflower seeds where home growing is legal.
Why LST suits autoflowers
Autoflowers run on a fixed clock. Most flower after three to five weeks and finish in roughly 9 to 12 weeks from sprout. High stress training such as topping, fimming or supercropping can slow growth for several days, and autoflowers have no extra veg time to make that up. LST keeps the plant growing at full speed because nothing is cut or crushed.
Benefits include:
- More even light. Lower branches rise toward the light instead of sitting in shade.
- More main bud sites. Instead of one big cola and many small ones, you get several strong tops.
- Lower height. Useful in small tents and closets.
- Better airflow. An open plant dries faster and resists mold.
For the general method, see our guide to low stress training for cannabis.
What you need
- Soft plant ties, garden wire with a rubber coating or soft string
- A fabric pot, which lets you clip ties to the rim, or small hooks drilled into a plastic pot
- Patience and clean hands
When to start LST on an autoflower
Start once the plant has four or five sets of leaves and the stem is flexible, usually two to three weeks from sprout. Starting earlier risks snapping a fragile stem. Starting much later means the stem has hardened and the plant may already be stretching into flower.
Do the main bending in the morning or a few hours after lights on, when stems are most flexible.
Step by step LST for autoflowers
- Water the day before. A hydrated stem bends more easily than a dry one.
- Bend the main stem. Hold the stem near the base and gently bend the top sideways until it sits close to horizontal. Go slowly and stop if you feel strong resistance.
- Tie it down. Loop a soft tie around the stem below the top and anchor it to the pot rim.
- Watch the side branches rise. Over the next few days the side branches will turn upward toward the light.
- Spread the branches. Tie the strongest side branches outward like the spokes of a wheel so they do not shade each other.
- Adjust every two to three days. The tips will turn up. Move ties to keep tops at the same height.
- Tuck big fan leaves. Instead of cutting leaves, tuck them under branches so light reaches lower sites.
When to stop
Keep adjusting through the stretch, which on autoflowers usually happens during the first two to three weeks of flowering. Once buds are forming well, stop moving branches and let the plant fill out. You can still loosen a tie that is cutting into a stem.

Can you combine LST with other training
Some experienced growers top healthy, vigorous autoflowers once, very early. It can work but adds risk. Light defoliation of a few large leaves that block bud sites is usually fine. Avoid heavy defoliation, supercropping or anything that leaves wounds during flower. A simple trellis net can also help hold a flat canopy, the basic idea of a screen of green.
Common LST mistakes
- Starting too late. A hard stem can snap.
- Using thin wire. Bare wire cuts into stems as they thicken.
- Forgetting to adjust. Ties left too long can girdle stems.
- Bending at a sharp angle. Aim for a smooth curve, not a crease.
- Training too hard in flower. Big bends late can stall buds.
What if a stem cracks
If you hear a crack but the stem is not severed, wrap the spot with plant tape or a soft tie to hold it in place. Most cracked stems heal in a few days and form a strong knuckle. If the stem is fully broken, remove the branch cleanly.
LST in different setups
- Small tents. One autoflower trained flat can fill a 2×2.
- Larger tents. Several plants trained outward let you fill the space evenly.
- Outdoors. LST helps keep plants low and less visible, and spreads them out to catch more sun.

Other habits that make LST work
Training only pays off if the plant is healthy. Give autoflowers 18 to 20 hours of light a day, keep feeding light and steady and avoid overwatering. Choose a final pot size before you germinate, since transplanting can slow an autoflower. Our guide to training techniques covers the wider toolkit, and if a plant stays small, read our post on the stunted autoflower.
Grow legally and responsibly
Home cultivation is only legal in some states, and each state sets its own plant limits, locking rules and rules about whether plants can be visible from a public place. You must be 21 or older to buy seeds from Kind Seed Co, and you should grow only where your state and city allow it. Check your state rules in our guide to the legal requirements for growing weed plants in your state before you plant. Federal treatment of cannabis seeds is also changing, so read our December 11 2026 seed rule explainer before you order. Keep plants and harvested flower locked away from children, pets and visitors, and never drive after using cannabis. This article is general information about gardening. Frequently asked questions
When should I start LST on autoflowers?
When the plant has four or five nodes, usually around two to three weeks from sprout, while the stem is still flexible.
Does LST stress autoflowers?
Very little when done gently. Nothing is cut, so the plant keeps growing at full speed, which is why LST is the preferred method for autoflowers.
Can I top an autoflower and also use LST?
Some growers top once very early on vigorous plants, but it adds risk. LST alone is the safer choice.
When do I stop LST?
Stop major bending once buds are forming well, usually two to three weeks into flower. You can still loosen ties after that.
What should I use to tie down autoflowers?
Soft plant ties, rubber coated garden wire or soft string. Avoid bare wire or anything thin that can cut into a growing stem.
