Rockwool cube germination for cannabis seeds
To germinate cannabis seeds in rockwool cubes, soak the cubes in pH adjusted water around 5.5 to 6.0, squeeze out the excess, drop one seed into each hole about a quarter inch deep, cover the hole lightly and keep the cubes warm, moist and humid under a dome. Most healthy seeds sprout in two to five days. When roots poke through the bottom of the cube, move it into a larger block, coco or soil. Rockwool is clean, consistent and easy to move, which is why hydro growers love it. This guide covers every step for adults 21 and older germinating beginner friendly seeds where home growing is legal.
For more on the medium itself, see our guide to rockwool for cannabis.
Why use rockwool for germination
- Consistent. Every cube holds water and air the same way.
- Clean. Rockwool is sterile when new, so it carries no pests.
- Easy to transplant. The whole cube moves into the next container, so roots are not disturbed.
- Great for hydro. Cubes fit into net pots, slabs and larger blocks.
The trade offs are pH and moisture. Rockwool starts with a high pH and can stay soggy if you overwater.
What you need
- Small rockwool starter cubes, often 1 to 1.5 inches
- A tray and a humidity dome
- pH test kit or meter and pH down
- Clean water
- A heat mat with a thermostat, optional but helpful
- Gloves and a dust mask for handling dry rockwool
Dry rockwool fibers can irritate skin and lungs. Wear gloves, avoid breathing dust and soak cubes before handling them much.
Step 1. Condition the cubes
New rockwool is alkaline. Soak the cubes for several hours or overnight in water adjusted to roughly 5.5 to 6.0 pH. Some growers add a very weak nutrient or root stimulant at this stage, but plain pH adjusted water works.
Step 2. Drain, do not squeeze dry
Lift the cubes and let them drain. Shake gently or press lightly to remove extra water. You want them moist, not dripping. A cube that is too wet holds little air and can rot seeds.
Step 3. Plant the seed
Most cubes have a small hole on top. If it is deeper than about a quarter inch, pinch a little rockwool from the side and use it to raise the floor of the hole. Drop one seed into each hole. Pointed end orientation matters less than depth. Cover lightly by pinching the top of the cube closed or adding a small piece of rockwool.
Step 4. Keep warm and humid
Place cubes in a tray under a humidity dome. Hold the temperature in the mid to upper 70s Fahrenheit. A heat mat with a thermostat helps in cool rooms. Light is not needed until the seed sprouts, but gentle light will not hurt.

Step 5. Watch moisture
Check the cubes daily. Lift one. If it feels light, add a little pH adjusted water to the tray so the cubes can wick it up. Avoid flooding the tops.
Step 6. Give light after sprouting
As soon as the seedling breaks the surface, give it gentle light. Lift the dome a little each day to lower humidity and harden the seedling.
Step 7. Transplant when roots appear
When white roots poke out the bottom or sides of the cube, usually 7 to 14 days after sprouting, place the whole cube into a larger rockwool block, coco, soil or a hydro system. Bury the cube so its top is level with or just below the new medium.
Common problems
Seeds not sprouting
Check temperature, moisture and seed age. Cold, soggy cubes slow germination. Read our post on soil temperature for planting for more on warmth.
Green algae on cubes
Algae grows on wet, lit surfaces. Cover the tops with a small square of plastic or a cube cap once seedlings are up.
Mold or damping off
Usually caused by too much water and not enough air. Read mold on rockwool for prevention.
Stretchy seedlings
Not enough light. Lower the light gently or add more.
Moving rockwool seedlings to soil
Rockwool and soil hold water differently. When you move a cube into soil, the cube can stay wet while the soil dries. Water the soil around the cube rather than the cube itself, and bury it fully so it blends in.

Rockwool vs other starters
Peat pellets, coco plugs and paper towels also work. Rockwool shines for hydro growers and for anyone who wants consistent, clean starts.
Germination basics that apply to every method
Whatever method you choose, seeds need the same three things: steady moisture without standing water, warmth and air. Keep starter media damp like a wrung out sponge, hold the area in the mid 70s Fahrenheit and give seeds darkness or low light until they sprout. Once a seedling is up, give it gentle light right away so it does not stretch. Handle taproots as little as possible, and plant with the root pointing down. Most healthy seeds sprout within one to five days, though older seeds can take longer.
Grow legally and responsibly
Home cultivation is only legal in some states, and each state sets its own plant limits, locking rules and rules about whether plants can be visible from a public place. You must be 21 or older to buy seeds from Kind Seed Co, and you should grow only where your state and city allow it. Check your state rules in our guide to the legal requirements for growing weed plants in your state before you plant. Federal treatment of cannabis seeds is also changing, so read our December 11 2026 seed rule explainer before you order. Keep plants and harvested flower locked away from children, pets and visitors, and never drive after using cannabis. This article is general information about gardening. It is not legal advice and it is not medical advice.
Frequently asked questions
How long do cannabis seeds take to sprout in rockwool?
Usually two to five days for fresh, healthy seeds in warm conditions.
What pH should rockwool be for germination?
Most growers soak cubes in water adjusted to about 5.5 to 6.0 pH.
How deep should I plant a seed in rockwool?
About a quarter inch. If the hole is deeper, pack a little rockwool into the bottom first.
Can I move rockwool seedlings into soil?
Yes. Bury the whole cube and water the soil around it so the cube does not stay soggy.
Is rockwool safe to handle?
Wear gloves and avoid breathing dust when handling dry rockwool. Soaking cubes first reduces dust.
Why are my rockwool cubes growing algae?
Wet surfaces exposed to light grow algae. Cover cube tops once seedlings are up.
