When to plant cannabis outdoors in Delaware
Delaware sits on the Delmarva Peninsula, between the Delaware Bay and the Chesapeake. Its land is flat and low, its summers are long and humid, and its growing season is one of the longest in the Mid Atlantic. For tomatoes, peppers and sweet corn, Delaware is excellent country. For cannabis, there is a legal problem first.
Home grow is not legal in Delaware
Delaware legalized adult use cannabis in 2023, and licensed retail sales began in 2025. Adults 21 and older may possess limited amounts and buy from licensed stores. However, the law does not allow home cultivation. The Office of the Marijuana Commissioner states plainly that adults cannot grow their own plants, and medical patients and caregivers cannot grow either. Only licensed cultivation facilities may grow cannabis in the state.
So this article is not a planting guide for Delaware homes. It explains how the Delmarva climate would work for cannabis, which may help readers who follow the issue or who plan to move to a state where home grow is allowed. If you live in Delaware, buy only from licensed retailers and check the Office of the Marijuana Commissioner for any change.
Delaware’s three counties
| County | Typical last frost | Typical first fall frost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Castle (Wilmington, Newark) | Mid to late April | Late October | Piedmont hills in the north, more clay |
| Kent (Dover) | Mid April | Late October | Flat farmland, open wind |
| Sussex (Georgetown, beaches) | Early to mid April | Early November | Sandy soil, ocean influence, humidity |
The season stretches from mid April into late October across most of the state. That is more than six months frost free, which would suit even long flowering strains.
Timing in a hypothetical legal season
For a photoperiod plant, the right window to plant out would be mid May to early June. Planting earlier, under short April days, can cause early flowering followed by a stall. By mid May, days are long enough to hold plants in vegetative growth, and soil has usually warmed. Our guide on when to plant cannabis seeds outdoors explains why day length matters, and our soil temperature guide for planting cannabis covers the soil check.
Most photoperiod strains would finish from late September to mid October. Sussex County, with its later fall frost, could handle strains that finish at the end of October.
Humidity and storms
Delmarva summers are humid, and late summer brings tropical storms and nor’easters. Both raise mold risk on dense flowers. In a legal setting, the best defenses would be wide spacing, removing lower branches for airflow, choosing mold resistant genetics, and staking plants against wind. Our guide on when to harvest outdoor cannabis explains how to judge ripeness, which helps when deciding whether to harvest ahead of a storm.
Soils across the peninsula
Sandy coastal plain

Much of Kent and Sussex has sandy, fast draining soil. It warms early in spring, which is good, but it holds little water or nutrients. A garden there would need compost, mulch and frequent watering in July and August.
Northern Piedmont
Northern New Castle County has heavier, more fertile soil with some clay. It holds water longer but can stay cold and wet in a rainy spring. Raised beds help. Our guide to the best soil for growing marijuana outdoors covers both soil types.
Pests on Delmarva
Delaware gardeners deal with Japanese beetles, stink bugs, spotted lanternflies and caterpillars such as corn earworm, which bores into flower heads. Deer are common across the state. Anyone who has grown hemp or vegetables here knows these pests and the routine of weekly inspection.
What Delaware residents can do now
Residents interested in cannabis cultivation can learn the skills without growing cannabis. Practice with tomatoes, which share many needs. Read up on germination with our guide on how to germinate cannabis seeds and on frost with our guide to frost damage on cannabis. Watch for news from the General Assembly. Several bills about the adult use market have passed in recent years, but none has legalized home grow, so be skeptical of headlines that suggest otherwise.
Why some states allow home grow and Delaware does not
When lawmakers wrote the 2023 law, home cultivation was left out as part of the political compromise needed to pass it. Supporters of home grow argue it gives adults a low cost, legal option. Opponents worry about enforcement and about competition with licensed businesses. Neighboring states take different approaches. New Jersey also bans home grow, while Maryland allows a small number of plants. These differences can confuse people who live near state lines, so always follow the law where you live.
A note on seeds and travel
Buying seeds online does not change Delaware law on growing. Federal rules for cannabis seeds are also changing, which adds more uncertainty for anyone ordering across state lines. Delaware residents who spend summers in a state that allows home grow should follow that state’s rules while there and should not bring plants, clones or harvested flower back across the line. Transporting cannabis between states remains illegal under federal law, even between two states that have both legalized adult use.

Lessons from Delaware hemp farms
Licensed hemp growers on Delmarva have shown how the climate behaves. They tend to transplant in late May or early June, plan for heavy late summer humidity and harvest in late September and October.
Grow legally and responsibly
Home cultivation is only legal in some states, and each state sets its own plant limits, locking rules and rules about whether plants can be visible from a public place. You must be 21 or older to buy seeds from Kind Seed Co, and you should grow only where your state and city allow it. Check your state rules in our guide to the legal requirements for growing weed plants in your state before you plant. Federal treatment of cannabis seeds is also changing, so read our December 11 2026 seed rule explainer before you order. Keep plants and harvested flower locked away from children, pets and visitors, and never drive after using cannabis. This article is general information. It is not legal advice and it is not medical advice.
