Best quantum board grow lights for cannabis

Quantum boards changed home growing. These flat panels covered in many small white diodes offered strong, even light with low heat at a price many hobby growers could afford. Today there are dozens of boards on the market, from small units for a 2×2 tent to large panels for a 5×5. This guide explains what makes a good quantum board for cannabis, how to compare models and how to set one up. It is written for adults 21 and older growing where home cultivation is legal.

We are not ranking specific boards in this post because models and specs change often. Instead, this is a checklist you can apply to any board you are considering.

What a quantum board is

A quantum board is a flat aluminum panel, sometimes two joined together, with hundreds of small LEDs spread across it. Spreading many low power diodes over a wide area runs cooler and more efficiently than a few high power chips. The board acts as its own heatsink, so most boards are passively cooled without fans.

What to compare

Efficacy

Efficacy, written as micromoles per joule, tells you how much plant usable light you get per watt. Higher is better. It affects both your power bill and how much heat the board adds to the tent.

Coverage map

Look for a PPFD map that shows light intensity across the whole footprint. A board that is very bright in the center but weak at the edges will grow uneven plants.

Size and footprint

Pick a board rated for your tent size. A board that is too small leaves dim corners. Too large and it may not fit with room for hanging.

Spectrum

Most boards use a mix of warm and cool white diodes, often with extra deep red. That broad spectrum supports veg and flower.

Driver

The driver converts wall power for the diodes. A remote driver can be mounted outside the tent to reduce heat. Check whether the driver is from a well known maker and whether it can be replaced separately.

Dimming

Dimming is essential. Seedlings need gentle light and flowering plants want much more.

Build and warranty

Check heatsink thickness, wiring quality and warranty length.

Board sizes by tent

Tent Board size to look for
2×2 Small single board
2×4 Long board or two small boards
3×3 Mid size board
4×4 Large board or pair of boards

How to set up a quantum board

  1. Hang it on adjustable ratchets from the strongest part of the frame.
  2. Start high and dim for seedlings.
  3. Lower or brighten the light each week as plants grow.
  4. Watch top leaves for bleaching or upward curling, which can mean too much light.
  5. Use a timer and keep the schedule steady.

Boards vs bars

Bar lights spread diodes across several strips. They can cover corners more evenly and let air pass between bars. Boards are often more affordable and easy to hang. Both grow excellent cannabis. Our post on quantum board vs bar LED explains the tradeoffs in more detail.

Measuring your light

You do not need a lab to check your board. A quantum sensor gives the most accurate reading. Some phone apps offer rough estimates if you calibrate them. Our guide to quantum sensors explained covers the options. Measure at canopy height in a grid pattern to see how even your coverage is.

Common mistakes

  • Buying on wattage alone. Look at efficacy and the light map.
  • Hanging too low early. Seedlings stretch when light is weak, but they burn when it is too strong.
  • Ignoring the driver. A cheap driver can fail early and take the whole light with it.
  • Skipping airflow. Boards run cool, but the tent still needs exhaust and circulation.

Reading a coverage map

A PPFD map is usually a grid of numbers laid over the light’s footprint, often measured at a set hanging height. Look at the spread between the highest number in the center and the lowest numbers in the corners. A small spread means even light, so plants at the edges grow nearly as well as plants in the middle. A big spread means you may need to move plants around, train them toward the center or add a second light. Check what height the map was measured at, because numbers drop as the light goes higher.

Upgrading over time

One advantage of boards is that you can add a second one as your space grows. Two smaller boards side by side can cover a 2×4 or 4×4 evenly. Some growers also add supplemental red or far red bars in flower. Start simple and add only if you see a clear need.

Pairing a board with seeds

A good board grows great plants when matched with genetics that fit the tent. Compact indica leaning strains and autoflowers suit small spaces. Larger trained canopies reward stronger light. Browse our indoor seeds collection to find the right fit.

Setting quantum board height

Heat, dust and cleaning

Boards are simple, but they still need some care. Dust settles on the diodes and the heatsink over a grow, which can trap heat and dim the light a little. Turn the light off, let it cool and wipe it gently with a dry microfiber cloth between runs. Check that wires and connectors are snug. Keep water and foliar sprays away from the board and driver. A clean board in a well ventilated tent should run for many grows.

What a buyer’s checklist looks like

Write down the tent size, your budget and the efficacy and coverage numbers for two or three boards you are considering. Note driver brand, dimming range and warranty length for each. The best choice is usually the one with even coverage across your exact footprint and a warranty you trust, not the one with the biggest wattage number on the box.

Grow legally and responsibly

Home cultivation is only legal in some states, and each state sets its own plant limits, locking rules and rules about whether plants can be visible from a public place. You must be 21 or older to buy seeds from Kind Seed Co, and you should grow only where your state and city allow it. Check your state rules in our guide to the legal requirements for growing weed plants in your state before you plant. Federal treatment of cannabis seeds is also changing, so read our December 11 2026 seed rule explainer before you order. Keep plants and harvested flower locked away from children, pets and visitors, and never drive after using cannabis. This article is general information about gardening. Frequently asked questions

What is the best quantum board for cannabis?

The best board for you is one rated for your tent size, with high efficacy, an even coverage map, dimming and a solid warranty.

Are quantum boards good for flowering?

Yes. Most use broad white spectrum diodes, often with extra red, that support both veg and flower.

How high should I hang a quantum board?

Follow the maker’s chart. Start higher and dimmer for seedlings and bring it closer or brighter as plants grow.

Do quantum boards get hot?

They run cooler than older lights but still add heat. A remote driver and good exhaust keep the tent comfortable.
