ViparSpectra Pro series review for cannabis
The ViparSpectra Pro series, often called the P series, is a line of board style full spectrum LED grow lights sized for common home tents, from small 2×2 setups up to 4×4. On paper, the P series is aimed at budget conscious and first time cannabis growers who want a dimmable, fanless light at a lower cost than premium brands. Its main appeal is simplicity: pick the model that matches your tent, hang it at the height the maker suggests and dim it to suit each stage. A good light is only half the story, so pair it with reliable genetics from our indoor seeds. This guide is for adults 21 and older growing where home cultivation is legal.
This is a spec based review. It draws on ViparSpectra’s published product pages, retailer listings and common grower feedback. We did not run our own test grow, and Kind Seed Co is not affiliated with ViparSpectra. Always check the current spec sheet before you buy, since listings can differ between sellers and versions.
ViparSpectra P series lineup
| Model | Listed power | Listed flowering coverage |
|---|---|---|
| P600 | 95 W | Small spaces, check maker |
| P1000 | 100 W | About 2×2 at around 14 inches |
| P1500 | 150 W | About 2.5×2.5 |
| P2000 | 200 W | About 3×3 at around 20 inches |
| P2500 | 250 W | Listed from about 4×2 to 4×3.5, depending on source |
| P4000 | 400 W | About 4×4 at around 24 inches |

The model number is not the wattage. A P1000 draws about 100 W, not 1000 W, so always compare the actual power draw listed on the spec sheet. Sources disagree on some coverage figures, especially for the P2500, so check the maker’s own page.
What the P series offers
According to ViparSpectra, the P series lights share a few core features:
- Full spectrum white light suited to both veg and flower.
- Built in dimmer on the driver.
- Fanless, passive cooling through an aluminum heat sink, so there is no fan noise from the light itself.
- Daisy chain connections on supported models, so you can dim several lights together.
- 3 year warranty as listed by the maker.
For first time growers, that mix covers the basics. A dimmer is especially useful, because it lets you run the light gently over seedlings and push it harder in flower without moving the fixture as often.
Strengths
- Clear size options. Each model lines up with a common tent size.
- Simple setup. Board style lights are easy to hang and center.
- Quiet. No built in fans.
- Dimmable. Good for seedlings and small tents.
- Lower cost than many premium brands, which makes it popular for first grows.
Limitations
- Board style spread. Boards concentrate diodes, so edges and corners may get less light than the center. Read quantum board vs bar LED.
- Output claims vary. Efficiency and output figures differ across listings, so we do not quote them here.
- Driver inside the tent. On many models the driver is attached, which adds a little heat to the space.
- Coverage depends on height. Listed coverage assumes certain hanging heights, which may not fit a short tent.
Matching a P series light to your tent
Start with your tent size and work backward. If you have a 2×2, the P1000 class is the obvious match. A 3×3 lines up with the P2000. A 4×4 points to the P4000. The P1500 and P2500 sit between those sizes and suit odd shaped spaces. A rough cross check is watts per square foot, explained in our guide to grow light watts per square foot.
Also check height. A taller plant, a large pot and the recommended hanging distance all need to fit in your tent. If the light has to hang closer than the maker suggests, dim it to avoid stress.
Using the P series through a cannabis grow
- Seedlings: hang high and dim low. See cannabis seedling light schedule.
- Veg: raise the dimmer as plants grow and add leaves. Many growers run 18 hours of light. Read the cannabis light cycle.
- Flower: switch photoperiod plants to 12 hours of light and 12 of dark, and bring intensity up gradually. See when to increase light intensity in flowering.
- Watch the tops. If the tops near the light turn pale, back off. See light bleaching cannabis.
- Train for even canopies. Board lights reward a flat canopy. Low stress training spreads branches into the brighter zone. Read training techniques for marijuana plants.

Getting more even coverage
Because boards put light in the middle, a few simple steps help:
- Use reflective tent walls. Most tents already have them. Keep them clean.
- Rotate plants. Turning pots every few days evens out growth.
- Raise the light a little. A slightly higher light spreads wider, at the cost of some intensity.
- Map your light. A PPFD map shows where your weak spots are. A light meter app can give a rough idea if you do not own a quantum sensor.
Buying tips
- Buy from a source with a clear spec sheet. Listings for the same model can differ, so look for actual power draw, coverage and hanging height.
- Keep your receipt. Warranty claims usually need proof of purchase.
- Check what is in the box. Hangers, a power cord and any daisy chain cables should be listed.
- Think about growth. If you might move to a bigger tent, check whether two smaller lights could be linked later.

Heat and running cost
Lower wattage means less heat and lower power bills than bigger fixtures. A P2000 class light in a 3×3 tent is a modest load for most homes. Still, plan exhaust for warm months. Read grow light heat management and grow light electricity cost.
Is the ViparSpectra P series worth it?
For a first or second grow in a standard tent, the P series looks like a sensible, simple choice on paper. Growers who want the most even coverage or the highest listed efficiency may prefer a bar style fixture or a premium brand. If you upgrade later, a P series light can still be useful for veg, mothers or a second tent.
Strain tips for P series growers
Compact, forgiving strains make life easier under a single board light. Autoflowers stay smaller and finish fast, while short, bushy photoperiods fill a tent evenly with training. Browse our indoor seeds and read top 7 strains for a grow tent for ideas.
