HLG grow lights review for cannabis

HLG grow lights review for cannabis

HLG grow lights are high end LED fixtures from Horticulture Lighting Group, a US brand known for quantum board and bar style lights built around efficient diodes and long warranties. On paper, HLG’s current lineup covers everything from small veg lights to 5×5 flowering fixtures, with maker listed efficiency figures among the highest in the home grow market. HLG lights are a good fit for cannabis growers who want a premium fixture, strong support and a light that can run for many grows. They cost more than many budget brands, so the value depends on how long you plan to grow. A great light only pays off with great genetics, so pick yours from our indoor seeds. This guide is for adults 21 and older growing where home cultivation is legal.

This is a spec based review. It draws on HLG’s published product pages and common grower feedback. We did not run our own test grow, and Kind Seed Co is not affiliated with HLG. Always check current specs on the maker’s site, since models change.

Key models in more detail

HLG 350 Diablo

According to HLG, the 350 Diablo draws 330 W and puts out 950 or more micromoles per second of PPF, for a listed efficiency of 2.80 micromoles per joule. HLG lists flowering coverage of about 3×5 when hung around 15 inches above the canopy, a universal 120 to 277 V driver and a 5 year warranty. For a 3×3 or 2×4 tent, that is a lot of light, and dimming lets you scale it back.

HLG Scorpion Diablo X

HLG lists the Scorpion Diablo X at 715 W and 2126 PPF, for an efficiency of 3.06 micromoles per joule, with 5×5 coverage. That puts it among the most efficient fixtures the brand sells. It is aimed at growers with a 5×5 tent or a small room who want maximum output.

Mid size and veg models

The 750 class fixtures target 4×4 and similar tents, while the VEG PRO 250 and 65 V2 cover veg, mothers and clones. The Blackbird is a newer home fixture aimed at 4×4 tents. At the time of writing, its published specs were unclear, so check HLG’s site directly.

What stands out about HLG

  • Efficiency. Maker listed efficiency figures are high across the lineup. More light per watt can mean less heat and lower running costs. See grow light electricity cost.
  • Warranty. HLG lists a 5 year warranty on fixtures like the 350 Diablo.
  • Range. Options from tiny veg lights to large bar fixtures.
  • Build. Passive cooling on most models, with no fans to fail.
  • Dimming. Most fixtures can be dialed down for seedlings or smaller spaces.

Things to weigh

  • Cost. HLG fixtures sit at the premium end of the home market.
  • Size. Some high output fixtures are more light than a small tent needs.
  • Model changes. Frequent updates mean older reviews may not match what you buy.
  • Real output varies. Listed PPF and efficiency come from the maker. Your actual light at the canopy depends on height, reflectivity and room size. Build a PPFD map to see what your plants get.

Board vs bar: which HLG style suits you?

HLG makes both quantum board and bar style fixtures. Boards are compact and simple to hang. Bars spread diodes over a wider area, which can give more even light across larger tents and let more heat escape. Read quantum board vs bar LED and grow light bar spacing for the details.

Matching an HLG light to your tent

Tent size HLG fixture class to look at Notes
2×2 65 V2 or small board Veg or small flower runs
2×4 or 3×3 350 Diablo Dim if needed
4×4 750 class or Blackbird Check current coverage specs
5×5 Scorpion Diablo X or Ultima Bar fixtures spread light well

These are starting points. Always check HLG’s current coverage charts for your exact model, and use our guide to grow light watts per square foot as a rough cross check.

Running an HLG light for cannabis

  1. Start high and dim for seedlings. Young plants need far less light than flowering plants. See cannabis seedling light schedule.
  2. Lower and raise intensity by stage. Follow the maker’s hanging guide and watch your plants.
  3. Watch for bleaching. White or pale tops near the light mean too much intensity. Read light bleaching cannabis.
  4. Manage heat. Efficient LEDs still make heat. See grow light heat management.
  5. Increase light in flower with care. See when to increase light intensity in flowering.
  6. Keep the right distance. Our guide to LED light distance for cannabis has general starting points.

Spectrum and extra features

Most of HLG’s flowering fixtures use a full spectrum white light, which looks natural to the eye and makes it easier to check plant health than the purple glow of older LEDs. Some models add deep red diodes, which many growers use to support flowering. A few fixtures in the lineup are built for veg only and lean toward a cooler, bluer spectrum. If you want ultraviolet light, check whether your model has it or plan for an add on, and read UV light for cannabis first, since UV needs care around eyes and skin.

Dimming is built into most drivers, usually through a knob on the driver. Some fixtures can be linked to an external controller. That lets you run the same light gently over seedlings and at full power in flower.

Buying tips

  • Buy for your space, not the biggest fixture. A light that is far too strong for your tent wastes power and heat.
  • Check the version. HLG updates models, so confirm the exact name and spec sheet.
  • Plan your hanging height. Make sure your tent is tall enough for the fixture, the plants and the gap between them.
  • Keep the paperwork. Warranty claims usually need proof of purchase.

Is HLG worth it?

If you plan to grow for years, want a long warranty and value efficiency, HLG is one of the stronger choices on paper. If you are trying your first grow on a tight budget, a less costly fixture may make more sense until you know you will stick with it. Either way, compare listed efficiency, coverage and warranty side by side, and remember that diode type alone does not tell the whole story. Our guide to grow light diode binning explains why.
