Growing weed in a closet
Growing weed in a closet works well if you set up the closet as a tiny grow room: put a small grow tent inside or line it with reflective material, add a dimmable LED, run an exhaust fan with a carbon filter, and keep the plant count to one or two compact autoflowers. Closets are short on space and airflow, so heat, humidity and odor are the main problems to solve. For more general small space ideas, see our tips for growing weed in tight spaces. Our autoflower seeds are the best match for a closet because they stay small and finish fast. This guide is for adults 21 and older in places where home cultivation is legal.
Check the law before you start
Home grow rules vary from state to state and change often. Some states let adults grow a small number of plants at home, some allow it only for registered patients, and some do not allow it at all. Many states that allow home grow require plants to be kept in an enclosed, locked space that is not visible to the public. A closet can help meet that kind of rule, but you still need to confirm the details where you live.
For example, Minnesota allows up to eight plants per residence, with no more than four mature and flowering, in an enclosed, locked space not open to public view (Minn. Stat. 342.09). Missouri requires a personal cultivation card and a locked space at a private residence that is not visible from a public place (Mo. Const. Art. XIV, Sec. 2). Both sources were accessed October 29, 2026. Check your own state’s statute or cannabis agency page before you plant, and check your lease or HOA rules too.

Tent in a closet or open closet grow?
You can grow in an open closet lined with reflective material, but a small tent inside the closet is easier for most people.

| Setup | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Tent inside closet | Lightproof, easier odor control, spills contained | Slightly less space, extra cost |
| Open closet | Uses every inch, low cost | Light leaks, harder to control smell and humidity, risk to walls and carpet |
A 2×2 or 2×4 tent fits most reach in closets. A walk in closet may fit a 3×3. Measure the height too, because you need room for the light, hangers and plants. For more on choosing, see grow box vs grow tent.
What you need for a closet grow
- A small tent sized to the closet floor
- A dimmable LED rated for that footprint. See grow lights for cannabis for the basics.
- A small inline fan and carbon filter to pull hot air and odor out
- A clip fan for air movement at the canopy
- Fabric pots, usually 3 to 5 gallons for autoflowers
- A timer for the light
- A thermometer and hygrometer
- A drip tray or waterproof floor liner

Managing heat in a closet
Closets trap heat. LEDs run cooler than older lights, but even an LED warms a small, closed space. Aim to keep the canopy in a comfortable range, roughly the same as a pleasant room. To manage heat:
- Mount the exhaust fan at the top of the tent, where warm air collects.
- Leave the closet door cracked or add a vent so fresh air can reach the tent.
- Run the light during the coolest part of the day if the closet gets hot.
- Watch for signs of heat stress in cannabis.
Humidity and airflow
Small spaces swing in humidity fast. Seedlings like it a bit humid, and flowering plants need drier air to avoid mold. A general guide is around 60 to 70 percent relative humidity for seedlings, 40 to 60 percent in veg and 40 to 50 percent in flower. Keep air moving with a clip fan and good exhaust. If you see moldy buds, check our guide to bud rot in cannabis. Our post on passive intake for grow tents explains how to bring fresh air in.

Odor control
A carbon filter attached to the exhaust fan is the most reliable way to control smell. Replace the carbon when odor starts getting through. Keep the tent zipped during flower, and make sure ducting has no gaps. If your fan has a speed controller, run it higher during flowering.
Electrical and fire safety
Closets are often small, enclosed and full of clothes or boxes. Clear everything out before you set up. Plug equipment into a quality power strip with surge protection, do not overload one outlet, and keep cords off the floor where water can reach them. Our post on grow tent fire safety goes deeper. If you are not sure about your home’s wiring, ask a licensed electrician.
Best plants for a closet grow
Short, fast plants are the key to a closet grow. Autoflowers stay compact and flower on their own schedule, so you do not need to change the light cycle. Strains with indica leaning, bushy growth fit best.

Closet friendly picks:
- Northern Lights Auto Fem, compact and easy
- Blueberry Auto Fem, bushy and fruity
- Critical Mass Auto Fem, a heavy producer for its size
- Quarter Pounder Auto Fem, built for productive small grows

Training plants in a closet
Training helps plants fill the space without hitting the light. Low stress training bends the main stem so side branches rise into an even canopy. See our guide to low stress training for cannabis. With autoflowers, keep training gentle and start early, since they have a short veg period.
A simple closet grow timeline
- Week 0: Set up and test the tent for a day. Germinate your seeds.
- Weeks 1 to 2: Seedling stage. Keep the light dimmed and the air a little humid.
- Weeks 3 to 5: Veg growth. Start gentle training. Increase light intensity.
- Weeks 5 to 10: Flowering. Lower humidity, run the filter and watch for mold.
- Harvest: Most autoflowers finish in about 8 to 12 weeks from seed, depending on the strain.

Frequently asked questions
Can you really grow weed in a closet?
Yes. Many home growers use closets. The keys are a lightproof space, good ventilation, a carbon filter and compact plants.
How many plants can I grow in a closet?
Most closets fit one or two plants in a 2×2 tent, or two to four in a 2×4. Your state’s legal limit comes first.
Do I need a tent in a closet?
Not always, but a tent makes light, odor and humidity much easier to control. It also protects the closet from water and moisture damage.
What is the best light for a closet grow?
A dimmable full spectrum LED sized for the tent footprint. LEDs make less heat than older lights, which matters in a small space.
Will a closet grow smell?
Yes, especially in flower. A carbon filter on the exhaust fan is the best way to control odor.
Are autoflowers or photoperiods better for a closet?
Autoflowers. They stay shorter, finish faster and do not need a light schedule change to flower.
Start your closet grow
