Heuchera Heaving: Why Coral Bells Lift Out of the Soil
Heuchera heaving is a winter problem. Coral bells have shallow roots, so freeze plus thaw cycles can push the crown up until roots sit bare in cold air.
The short answer
Iowa State University Extension notes repeated freezing plus thawing lifts shallow rooted perennials. Coral bells are prone, mostly in their first winter. Spread 3 to 4 inches of mulch over the crown after the ground freezes. Pull it back in early spring. Plant in spring when you can.

Why does heuchera heave out of the ground?
Iowa State notes water in the soil expands as it freezes plus lifts the plant. When the soil thaws, the plant stays up. Roots plus crowns then face cold, drying winds.
| Factor | Effect | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow roots | Prone to heave | Iowa State |
| First winter | Higher risk | Iowa State |
| Late summer planting | Small root system | Iowa State |
| Mulch after freeze | Steadier soil | Iowa State |
| Established 1 year plus | Less likely to heave | Iowa State |

When should heuchera be mulched?
Iowa State advises a 3 to 4 inch layer over the crown after the ground has frozen. Mulch added too early can delay dormancy. Remove the extra mulch gradually as the soil thaws in early spring.
Which plants heave besides coral bells?
Iowa State lists garden mums, Shasta daisy, painted daisy, strawberries, foamflower plus bergenia. Sound plant debris left over winter adds some insulation.

How to: step by step
- Plant heuchera in spring if you can.
- Leave sound debris in place in fall.
- Wait until the ground freezes.
- Spread 3 to 4 inches of mulch over the crown.
- Check crowns in winter thaws.
- Pull back extra mulch in early spring.
Troubleshooting
Crown sitting above the soil: frost heave. Press it back plus cover the roots.
Yearly heaving: no mulch. Mulch after the ground freezes.
Ragged spring leaves: winter wear. NC State notes removing all foliage spurs new leaves.
For plant stress see environmental stresses on plants plus frost damage. Read mulch for cannabis. Kind Seed Co also stocks cannabis seeds.

FAQ
When should heuchera be mulched?
Iowa State University Extension advises mulching after the ground has frozen. Applying mulch too early can delay dormancy plus raise the risk of winter injury.
Do new coral bells heave more?
Iowa State notes newly planted heuchera tend to heave their first winter. A couple of years after planting the roots are less likely to heave.
Can heaved plants survive?
Iowa State notes heaved perennials may be seriously damaged because the crown plus roots are exposed to cold, dry air. Resetting them early helps.
Which other perennials heave?
Iowa State lists garden mum, Shasta daisy, painted daisy, strawberries, foamflower, bergenia plus pincushion flower.
When is the right time to plant heuchera?
NC State Extension notes they are usually planted in late fall or early spring. Iowa State advises spring planting for plants prone to heaving.
