Jacks 321 for cannabis
Jacks 321 is one of the most popular feeding programs among home cannabis growers, and for good reason. It uses three simple, inexpensive dry ingredients that you mix by weight, it works in hydro, coco and soilless mixes and it removes much of the guesswork from bottled nutrient lines. The name comes from the ratio of the three parts. This guide explains what each part does, how growers commonly mix it, how to adjust it through the grow and the mistakes to avoid. It is written for adults 21 and older growing where it is legal.
What Jacks 321 is
Jacks 321 is a feeding approach built around three products:
- Jacks Professional Part A (5 12 26). Supplies nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and micronutrients.
- Calcium nitrate (15.5 0 0). Often sold as Part B. Supplies calcium and extra nitrogen.
- Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate). Supplies magnesium and sulfur.
Mixed in roughly a 3 to 2 to 1 ratio by weight, these three cover the nutrients a cannabis plant needs. The same basic mix is commonly used from late veg through flower, with small tweaks.
Why growers like it
Cost. Dry salts go a long way. A season’s worth can cost a fraction of a full bottled line.
Simplicity. Three powders instead of a shelf of bottles and additives.
Consistency. Weighing dry salts gives repeatable results once you dial in your recipe.
Flexibility. It works in coco, rockwool, DWC and soilless mixes, and many growers use it in containers with peat based media.
How growers commonly mix it
A commonly shared starting point is about 3.6 grams of Part A, 2.4 grams of calcium nitrate and 1.2 grams of Epsom salt per gallon of water. Always check the current product label and adjust for your water, medium and plant response. Many growers start lighter on seedlings and young plants and work up.
The golden rule: never mix the concentrated parts together. Part A contains phosphates and sulfates, and calcium nitrate contains calcium. In concentrated form they can react and form insoluble solids that settle out and lock nutrients away. Always dissolve each part fully in the full volume of water, one at a time.
Mixing order most growers use:
- Fill your reservoir or jug with the full amount of water.
- Add Part A and stir until fully dissolved.
- Add calcium nitrate and stir until dissolved.
- Add Epsom salt and stir.
- Check EC or PPM, then adjust pH last.

Typical targets by stage
| Stage | Common approach | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Seedlings | Plain water or very light mix | Start feeding as true leaves develop |
| Early veg | Partial strength 321 | Build up as growth speeds up |
| Late veg | Full strength 321 | Watch leaf color |
| Early flower | Full strength 321 | Some growers add a bloom product |
| Late flower | Full strength or slightly reduced | Watch for tip burn |
These are general patterns, not hard rules. Let the plants guide you.
pH targets
For hydro and coco, many growers aim for a pH of roughly 5.8 to 6.2. For soilless peat mixes, a slightly higher range around 6.0 to 6.5 is common. Jacks Part A is formulated to buffer pH somewhat, but your tap water still affects the final number. Measure every batch.

Flower tweaks
Some growers switch to Jacks Bloom 10 30 20 for part of flower or add a potassium and phosphorus booster mid flower. Others run the same 321 mix from start to finish with good results. If you change products, adjust slowly and watch the plants for a week before changing anything else.
Water quality matters
Hard tap water already contains calcium and magnesium. If your water reads high in PPM before you add anything, you may need less calcium nitrate and Epsom, or you may want to blend in reverse osmosis water. Very soft or RO water may need the full amounts. Testing your source water once is a smart first step.
Common mistakes
Mixing concentrates. This causes precipitation. Always dissolve separately in the full volume.
Skipping the scale. Measuring spoons are not accurate enough for salts. A small digital scale that reads to 0.1 gram is inexpensive and essential.
Overfeeding young plants. Full strength too early can burn seedlings. Start light.
Ignoring runoff. In coco and soilless pots, salts can build up. Check runoff regularly using our guide on runoff pH testing.
Blaming nutrients for environment problems. Heat, poor airflow and overwatering cause symptoms that look like deficiencies. Rule those out first with leaf symptom guide to common deficiencies.
Jacks 321 in soil
Jacks 321 is mainly used in soilless media. In amended living soil, adding a full salt program can disrupt soil life and is usually unnecessary. If you grow in bagged potting soil without heavy amendments, some growers use a reduced strength 321 later in the grow once the soil’s starter nutrients run out.
Storage and safety
Store each powder sealed, dry and clearly labeled, away from children and pets. Calcium nitrate absorbs moisture from the air and can clump, so keep the bag tightly closed. Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin.

Making a stock solution
Some growers prefer to mix concentrated stock tanks to save time. If you do, keep Part A and calcium nitrate in two separate stock containers, label them clearly and dose each into the reservoir water one at a time. Never pour the two stocks into each other. For small home grows, weighing fresh for each batch is usually simpler and avoids mistakes.
Grow legally and responsibly
Home cultivation is only legal in some states, and each state sets its own plant limits, locking rules and rules about whether plants can be visible from a public place. You must be 21 or older to buy seeds from Kind Seed Co, and you should grow only where your state and city allow it. Check your state rules in our guide to the legal requirements for growing weed plants in your state before you plant. Federal treatment of cannabis seeds is also changing, so read our December 11 2026 seed rule explainer before you order. Keep plants and harvested flower locked away from children, pets and visitors, and never drive after using cannabis. This article is general information. Frequently asked questions
What is Jacks 321?
Jacks 321 is a feeding program using Jacks Part A, calcium nitrate and Epsom salt mixed in roughly a 3 to 2 to 1 ratio by weight.
Can I mix Jacks Part A and calcium nitrate together?
Not in concentrated form. Dissolve each part separately in the full volume of water to avoid precipitation.
Does Jacks 321 work in soil?
It is mainly used in coco, hydro and soilless mixes. In amended living soil it is usually unnecessary.
Do I need a bloom booster with Jacks 321?
Not necessarily. Many growers run 321 through flower, while others add Jacks Bloom or a booster mid flower.
Final thoughts
