Best regular cannabis seeds for breeding
The best regular cannabis seeds for breeding are stable, well known lines that give you real males and females to work with, such as OG Kush, Northern Lights, White Widow, Skunk, Afghan Kush and Chemdawg, plus modern regular lines like Bruce Banner, Original Glue and Alien OG. You will find a curated set in Rick’s regular THC picks. This guide is for adults 21 and older where home growing is legal, and it explains why regulars matter for breeders, what makes a good parent and how to start a simple project.
Why breeders use regular seeds
Regular seeds are seeds that have not been feminized. Each one can become a male or a female plant. For most home growers who just want flowers, feminized seeds are simpler. For breeders, regular seeds are essential, and here is why:
- You get true males. A male plant makes pollen in a natural way. Breeders select males for vigor, structure and aroma traits, just like they select females.
- You see the full range of a line. Growing out a pack of regulars shows you the variation inside a strain, which helps you find standout plants.
- They are closer to how cannabis was bred for generations. Most classic strains were developed by crossing male and female plants.

Check the rules before you make seeds
Breeding means making seeds, and the rules for that can be different from the rules for growing flowers. Confirm that your state’s home grow law allows it, stay within your plant limit, and keep in mind that federal treatment of cannabis seeds is also changing. What makes a good breeding parent?
A great breeding parent is not always the plant with the biggest buds. Breeders look for:

- Stability. Lines that have been worked for many generations tend to pass on traits more predictably.
- Vigor. Healthy, fast growing plants that recover well from training.
- Structure. Strong branches, sensible node spacing and a plant shape that suits your space.
- Aroma. A distinct, appealing terpene profile you want to keep.
- Resilience. Plants that resist mold, pests and stress in your conditions.
- No signs of intersex traits. Plants that throw both male and female flowers under normal conditions are usually avoided as parents. Learn more in our guide to hermaphrodite cannabis.
Classic regular lines for breeding
These strains have long histories and have been used as parents in countless modern crosses.

OG Kush
OG Kush Photo Reg is a cornerstone of West Coast genetics. It brings an earthy, piney, fuel aroma and a sturdy hybrid frame. Many modern kush and cookies lines trace back to it.
Northern Lights
Northern Lights Photo Reg is widely described as an Afghani based indica that became one of the most famous breeding plants of the 1980s. Breeders value its compact size, vigor and earthy sweet aroma.
White Widow
White Widow Photo Reg is known for heavy resin and a balanced structure. It has been used to add frost to many crosses.
Skunk
Skunk Photo Reg represents the Skunk line, one of the first stable hybrids. It is famous for uniformity and a pungent, sweet aroma, which made it a backbone of early breeding.
Afghan Kush
Afghan Kush Photo Reg comes from the Hindu Kush region and brings broad leaves, dense buds and hashy, earthy aroma. Breeders use it to add structure and resin.

How to start a simple breeding project
- Set a goal. Decide what you want to keep, such as an aroma, a plant shape or faster finishing.
- Grow out a pack of regulars. Germinate more seeds than you plan to keep, within your legal plant limit.
- Sex your plants early. Males show small pollen sacs at the nodes, while females show white pistils. Separate males quickly if you do not want open pollination.
- Select your parents. Keep the best female and the best male by your own goals, and take notes on each.
- Make a controlled cross. Collect a little pollen from your chosen male and apply it to one or two branches of your female. This keeps most of the plant seedless.
- Harvest and dry the seeds. Seeds are ready when they look dark and mottled and the calyx splits. Dry them gently before storing.
- Test your seeds. Grow out a few to see what you made.

Storing seeds
Keep seeds in a cool, dark and dry place in an airtight container. Label each container with the parents and the date. Many growers keep seed vials in a sealed container with a small desiccant pack.
Common mistakes in home breeding
- Keeping too few plants to choose from. Selection works better with more options.
- Ignoring the male. The male contributes half the genetics.
- Letting pollen drift. Pollen travels easily and can seed an entire tent.
- Skipping notes. Without notes, you will forget which plant did what.

Frequently asked questions
Are regular seeds better than feminized seeds for breeding?
For most breeding projects, yes. Regular seeds give you true male plants, which many breeders prefer as pollen donors.
How do I tell male and female plants apart?
Males grow small, round pollen sacs at the nodes. Females grow white, hair like pistils. These signs usually appear soon after the plant matures or after the switch to 12/12.
Which regular strain is best for a first breeding project?
Stable classic lines like Northern Lights, Skunk or OG Kush are a good start because they are well documented and predictable.
Can I breed cannabis at home legally?
It depends on your state’s law, your plant limit and changing federal seed rules. Check before you start. This is general information, not legal advice.
How should I store homemade seeds?
Keep them cool, dark and dry in an airtight, labeled container.
