Grow Light for Parodia: Light for Ball Cactus Blooms Indoors

Yellow flowers on a ball cactus under an LED

A grow light for parodia fills in when a window falls short. This small ball cactus from South America likes plenty of light plus a dry rest in winter.

The short answer

Give parodia a sunny window or a grow light 6 to 12 inches above it for 14 to 16 hours a day. NC State lists full sun to part shade. Let the soil dry fully between waterings. Hold back water in winter so it sets flower buds.

How much light does parodia need?

NC State lists parodia for full sun to part shade and notes it can sunburn in very hot climates. Minnesota Extension says cacti need lots of light in a bright sunny window. UF/IFAS also suggests a sunny spot indoors. Minnesota Extension rates a high light spot at more than 1,000 foot candles.
A south window gives the most natural light indoors and a grow light makes up for a dim one. NC State notes part shade is fine in very hot spots.

How do you set up the grow light?

Minnesota Extension points to cool white fluorescent tubes, or a blend of daylight tubes, hung 6 to 12 inches over cacti for 14 to 16 hours daily. Iowa State puts succulents within 12 inches of an LED or fluorescent light, run on a timer for 12 to 16 hours. Minnesota Extension’s lighting page sets flowering houseplants 6 to 12 inches away and says LEDs do not produce too much heat.

How do you get parodia to bloom?

Minnesota Extension says good light with dry soil and cool nights brings cacti into bloom indoors. Per NC State, parodia flowers reach 1 to 2 inches across atop the stem. It also says to let the soil dry completely and to hold it dry in winter.
A dry winter sets up flower buds and cool nights help bring bloom indoors. Feed once or twice a year at half rate.

Troubleshooting

Pale stretched growth: dim light. Drop the lamp or add hours.

Brown or tan patches: too much light too fast. Raise the light and adjust slowly.

Soft yellow growth: overwatering. Let the soil dry between waterings.
